The SASS Free From Faith Helpline

In a society as rich in belief and community as South Africa, navigating a personal journey away from faith can be a challenging and isolating experience. The decision to question or leave one’s religious upbringing often comes with unique emotional complexities, including difficult conversations with family and the search for a new sense of community and purpose.

To provide a compassionate and confidential space for this journey, the South African Secular Society (SASS) has launched the Free From Faith (FFF) Helpline. Our mission is to offer a supportive, non-judgmental ear for individuals exploring their beliefs or transitioning away from religion.

What We Offer

The FFF Helpline is a peer-support service, not a platform for “de-conversion” or giving direct advice. Our trained facilitators, guided by the principles of trauma-informed care and overseen by secular-minded clinical professionals, offer a listening ear with empathy and respect. We validate your feelings and support your self-discovery, allowing you to navigate this personal process at your own pace.
We are here to help you find your own way forward. The helpline provides access to resources on topics such as:
  • Secular Ethics: Building a positive, ethical life based on reason and compassion.
  • Critical Thinking Skills: Tools for understanding the world through evidence and logic.
  • Community Building: Finding and connecting with like-minded individuals and secular communities in South Africa.
  • Navigating Personal Relationships: Strategies for managing difficult conversations with family and friends.

Your Privacy Is Our Priority

Your confidentiality is of the utmost importance. The FFF Helpline ensures a secure and private conversation.
