Volunteer for SASS
Join SASS as a Volunteer
Thank you for joining the South African Secular Society (SASS) as a (paying) Member. We value your contribution and strive to apply your money to the best advantage to promote secularism and support the non-religious minority in South Africa. Membership fees are non-refundable.
But what if you want to contribute more than mere money: Something limited, that cannot be replaced: Your valuable time?
If you are motivated by the idea of helping the non-religious in a tangible way, apply to become a volunteer for SASS!
Our volunteers undertake to:
- Attend an online interview as a potential Volunteer
- Work in one or two of our projects for at least an average of 4 hours a month averaged over 3 months,
- Make a meaningful contribution to those SASS project(s) –this is more important than clock-watching,
- In any 12-month period, attend at least half the monthly General Meetings, online on Zoom on the second Sunday of each month, 10:00-12:00 (up to 2 hours). Give a reasonable apology for those you cannot attend.
SASS Volunteers have privileges that are not given to the regular Member: They:
- have full voting and speaking rights at General Meetings (including the Annual General Meeting),
- can become Project Leaders and Mentors,
- can become SASS Marriage Officers after proving their commitment,
- can elect the Executive Committee (Exco),
- can understudy Exco members, and
- eventually stand for Exco themselves.
If you are passionate about humanism and promoting secular values, becoming a SASS Volunteer can be a fulfilling use of your time. Depending on which projects you work in, you can learn skills as diverse as people management, social media, and podcast creation.
Caution! If you want to Volunteer only to become a Marriage Officer, please deeply consider your motives. There is no guarantee that, as a Volunteer, you will be accepted as a Candidate Marriage Officer. We want Volunteers who are, firstly, passionate about serving our community, and see becoming a Marriage Officer only as a possible cherry on top. This is a service to the secular community, not a career!
Please read the following carefully before applying:
- All Volunteer applicants must be paying SASS Members in good standing.
- All applicants must read the SASS Mission Statement and Ethos. Should your views, beliefs, or conscience not align, please do not apply, as you will not be accepted.
- If you practice any religion or other superstition (e.g. Reiki, crystal healing, wicca, homeopathy, seances, or astrology), please do not apply: you will not be accepted as a SASS Volunteer.
- If you are “spiritual but not religious” and your spirituality involves a belief in anything unscientific –like disembodied spirits, souls, or an afterlife– please do not apply: you will not be accepted as a Volunteer.
